Upskilling Drivers for a Seamless ETCS Rollout

Master the European Train Control System with a Combination of Simulators and Mobile Apps

The upskilling of drivers is essential to ensure a successful roll out of the European Train Control System (ETCS). However, rail operators face the unenviable task of trying to arrange ETCS training programmes that coincide with infrastructure roll out, and avoid having to repeat training if timescales slip.

With large numbers of drivers to train, restricted timescales and potential disruption due to infrastructure issues, operators should be focussed on how to accelerate learning and maintain driver competency, regardless of external factors.

A blended approach to training mitigates risk by focusing the training needs based on desired learning outcomes, trainee numbers, timescales and budget.

Full-cab simulators offer the best rehearsal of ETCS driving procedures, as part of a journey. However with 600 to 1000+ drivers and a limited number of expensive simulators, there is an immediate bottleneck. Desktop simulators offer useful, if less immersive, practise however are still limited by numbers and location. Simulation on mobile devices focuses on specific learning outcomes and offers a flexible, less expensive way to maintain driver competencies, without the need to repeat training programmes or install and maintain extensive physical infrastructure.

Depending on budget, it is the combination of all three training methods that will ensure operators mitigate risk when delivering and maintaining ETCS competencies.
