Denova’s TMS discovery app is a quick and easy solution to train new and existing drivers on how to use Train Management Systems

Requirement

When developing the Virtual Train Discovery App for the Hitachi Class 800 and GWR, an experienced driver trainer said “our drivers know how to drive trains, it’s the TMS that causes the problems” indicating the new Hitachi Train Management System (TMS). The requirement was simple. They needed an easy and quick way of training new and existing drivers and train crew on how to use the TMS.

Solution

Starting with the screen specification manual the Denova team simulated an exact replica of the TMS interface and functionality that drivers and train crew could expect to see in live operations including the login, journey planner and traction status. Built for Android , iOS and Windows operating systems the simulator also included an on-screen glossary and train event simulation enabling the driver to become familiar with what they will experience on the TMS in the event of minor or major faults.

Outcome

With the introduction of ever-increasing train control digitisation, the TMS discovery app enabled Hitachi Rail to provide GWR with clear, easily distributed simulation training for the essential TMS interface. The simulation app enables drivers and train crew to practice regularly and without consequence on live train controls.

The TMS discovery app has now been rolled out to other Train Operating Companies (TOC) including LNER, TPE, Lumo and Avanti West Coast, where they are using pre-scripted TOC specific training scenarios, focused on short sharp learning outcomes, to build driver confidence and accelerate learning.
